This page explains what the jurisdiction information published on this website is, where it comes from, and what it can and cannot be used for. It applies to every page on this site that summarizes a city or county requirement, including our location pages.
The requirements summarized on our location pages were compiled from publicly available sources. Those sources include the official websites of the cities and counties we serve, their municipal codes and zoning ordinances, department handouts, permit submittal checklists and plan review correction lists, and county recorder, surveyor and assessor records. Each location page names the agencies it relies on and links to them. We assembled this material as working reference for our own practice, and we publish it because property owners, civil engineers and architects ask us these questions constantly.
Each location page carries an Information Reviewed date. That is the day the page was last checked against its sources. It is not a warranty that every figure was accurate on that day, and it says nothing about changes made after it. Codes, handouts and submittal procedures in Los Angeles County and Ventura County change regularly, and some change without announcement.
For any requirement described here, the controlling authority is the department that administers it. Where this site and a department disagree, the department governs. Where a department's own published documents disagree with each other, which happens more often than you would expect, only that department can resolve it.
Several jurisdictions in our service area are in the middle of rewriting the rules described on these pages. Building code adoption cycles, post-fire rebuild ordinances and executive orders, tree ordinance amendments and full zoning code rewrites are all in motion. Treat what you read here as the starting point for a conversation with the department rather than a settled rule.
The information on this site is general information. It is not professional advice, and it is not a professional opinion, survey, certification or other work product prepared under the signature and seal of a licensed land surveyor. Reading it does not create a professional or client relationship with Builoff Surveying & Mapping, Inc. A professional opinion about a specific property is a survey, and a survey is signed and sealed.
Nothing on this site should be read as a representation that a permit, approval, clearance or inspection sign-off will be issued, or that any particular survey product will satisfy any particular reviewer. We describe what is commonly required. We do not promise outcomes.
Our research identified a substantial number of thresholds that are not published anywhere we could find, including required contour intervals, vertical datums, and whether a surveyor's certification is required at a particular inspection. Where a number could not be confirmed from a primary source, we omitted it rather than estimating it. If a page does not state a figure you were looking for, that is usually the reason, and the answer is a short call to the department.
If you need a requirement confirmed for a specific parcel, we can confirm it with the administering department as part of the project scope. That is ordinary work for us and it is often the fastest route to an answer you can rely on. Call 323-240-2303 or request an estimate.
